Our Hotel and Its History
Kauffer, who is an engineer, topographer and cartographer, came to Istanbul for the first time in 1784 under the auspices of Count Choiseul Gouffier, the last French Ambassador appointed to Istanbul at the time. Ambassador Gouffier is a very interesting personality and besides Kauffer; He travels with a large delegation of artists, cartographers, painters and geographers. For this delegation, he established an observatory in the French palace in the Taksim region and assigned this team in line with their abilities, and gave Kauffer the task of drawing the map of Istanbul.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Gouffier mediated for the establishment of good relations between his country, France, and the Ottoman Empire, and made efforts for these two countries to cooperate. He provoked the Ottomans against Russia and was successful in this regard. Later, Kauffer played a very important role in the improvement of relations and alliances between these two countries, which I will talk about in the next section.
In 1786, Kauffer completed his drawing and made the map as we see it. This drawing (drawn 360 years after the first map that Buondelmonti drew seeing the city in 1426) was the first scientific-scale map of Istanbul and is the most accurate drawing of Istanbul compared to today.
After the French Revolution, Ambassador Gouffeir was recalled to his country in 1792, but Kauffer did not accept this situation and refused to leave the Ottoman Empire. After this date, Kauffer came under the auspices of the Ottoman State and was paid a salary. He progressed rapidly in the Ottoman Empire in a short time, and the sultan of the period III. Selim has become one of the important cartographers. So much so that the Ottoman-Russian relations, interrupted by the French Ambassador Count Choiseul Gouffier, were reversed by Kauffer's initiatives and contributions. Thanks to the information Kauffer had about his country, Russia and the Ottoman Empire gained superiority against the French and became two alliance countries. Kauffer served the Ottoman Empire for many years in the fields of engineering and draftsmanship and made significant contributions.
Kauffer's very valuable collection, which includes all manuscript diaries, notes, the first drawings of Istanbul and the Bosphorus, sketches, correspondence and correspondence with the Russian Ambassador to Istanbul, Vasiliy Tomara, and manuscript cartography materials that can be traced from the archives today. It is exhibited in .
AKKA Lush Hotel building is among the first buildings of this region, the construction of which was started in 1894. The building was completed in 1896 and has preserved its current form. The renovation of the building was carried out by our company AKKA in 2017, preserving the original and original. This map was applied with the idea that it would reflect the history of Istanbul and Taksim in the best way possible.
A high resolution print-ready digital map of this size and quality was found in one of the oldest libraries in Greece and purchased with royalties. Our company has created a signature and symbol that coincides with the history of the buildings by applying this map to the rooms of both our hotels in Taksim.
