History of Hagia Triada Church

The foundations of the Hagia Triada Greek Orthodox Church, which is located at the intersection point of important locations of Beyoğlu, were laid in 1876 with the permission of Sultan Abdulaziz. Before that, there was a wooden church dedicated to Aya Yorgi on the same land. There was also an old Greek Orthodox cemetery in the churchyard. The wooden church was inadequate considering the needs of the congregation of the period. For this reason, it was demolished along with the cemetery nearby, and the construction of the Aya Triada church was started instead. The cemetery was moved to the Pangalti district. After fourteen years of construction, the church was completed in 1880. The church's opening was held on Sunday, which coincides with the “Feast of the Ascension of the Holy Cross”, which can be defined as the day of the consecration of the cross on which Jesus was crucified. The celebration date of this holiday in every Christian community is different from each other. This feast celebrated on September 14 for Orthodox Christians, is also the date on which the Hagia Triada Church was opened for worship.
